Seaside Dining

Wilmington, NC

The last piece of the puzzle is always the hardest. These do-it-yourselfers had updated their home room by room but struggled when it came to the final pieces – the Dining Room and Entry. Having created a cohesive coastal color scheme and relaxed aesthetic, they called on Big Sky to help get it just right. The red and gold Dining Room felt dated next to the coastal blues and warm neutrals in the adjacent rooms. The clients had beautiful existing dining room furniture, but the fabric seat cushions provided an opportunity for a refresh. We selected a turquoise linen paired with a traditional aqua and gold floral for the chair cushions, giving the head chairs a statement back fabric and all chairs a contrasting turquoise welt.

The existing lantern sconces worked well in the room but the metal finish was too dark and heavy for the new breezy color scheme. We worked with a local faux finisher to paint the lanterns an eye-catching turquoise embellished with gold brushstrokes. We swapped out the traditional lamps, art, and dried floral arrangement for brighter, more modern lamps and accessories, but the element that brought the room together was the Phillip Jeffries grasscloth in a coastal Caribbean blue. The Entry was a small but impactful update. With space constraints created by the door, we collaborated with the homeowners to design a custom shelf that offered function and style. Using their existing driftwood mirror for inspiration, we custom designed the shelf out of white oak and white washed corbels.
