A second home at the coast should feel like an exhale; a place to gather, unwind and stay awhile. The vision was a fresh interpretation of coastal living; comfortable and collected, with a palette inspired by the colors of the water and sky. The tension between free flowing cool tones and textural neutrals is exactly what lures us to the coast. One of the most important color decisions came from the kitchen counter stools. In fact, the fabric on those stools was the first item selected for the entire project. Its scenic pattern subtly speaks to the importance of nature in the design while introducing the emerald green, sky blue and navy that would eventually appear throughout the home.
The colors a woven throughout the home alongside rattan, wicker, blonde woods and other organic materials. Casual elements like shiplap, live-edge wood and painted furniture feel elevated when paired with custom upholstery, original artwork and intentional lighting. The main living area presented its own design challenge. With natural sunlight spilling in from nearly every direction, the living room, dining room and kitchen enjoy a beautiful sense of openness and flow. But with three distinct functions occupying one continuous space, every element needed to work together. The stools themselves swivel on blonde cerused oak bases, which means you can be seated at the island but still easily join conversation in the dining room. In the dining area, a custom live edge table adds another layer of personality. Big Sky worked closely with local carpenter John White and the clients to determine the table’s size, wood species and integrated details. Seating eight was important for a family with four children, but the table also needed to leave enough room for a sideboard without overpowering the space. Although it required a crane to get it to the second floor, the final result is a piece that feels perfectly proportioned to the room, with a warm wood tone that connects beautifully to the surrounding casegoods and fireplace mantel. Its organic shape even inspired other furnishings, including a sculptural living room coffee table with a base reminiscent of coral. Throughout the bedrooms, custom headboards and bedding give each space its own distinct personality. In these smaller rooms, the beds became an opportunity to make a statement through pattern, texture and thoughtful detailing. Every color, texture and furnishing works together to create a home that feels elevated enough to be special, yet comfortable enough to truly live in. Most importantly, it was designed for what the family wanted most: a place to gather, relax and enjoy more time at the coast
