Restorative, Organic, Zen

On Neutral Ground

Wilmington, NC

Soft neutrals and natural materials set the stage for this transformed primary suite, a space designed to feel calm, grounded, and quietly luxurious. The clients were drawn to blonde wood, brushed brass, and understated marble, so the renovation focused on bringing those elements forward in a way that felt cohesive and serene. The palette is intentionally restrained, allowing texture and shape to carry the aesthetic. Arched accents—both on the vanity fronts and in the newly constructed passageway—create a sense of softness that elevates the suite without overwhelming it. The result is a room that feels restorative from the moment you step inside.

The most impactful architectural change took place in the space between the bedroom, bathroom, and closet. What was once a simple pass-through became an opportunity to create meaningful storage and a visual moment. The former cased opening was reshaped into an elegant arch, and the unused alcove was transformed into custom built-ins that now house linens, toiletries, and overflow wardrobe items. This single update establishes a natural transition between the rooms and brings a sense of purpose to an area that previously felt like a leftover pocket of space. Inside the bathroom, lighting became one of the defining features of the design. The clients wanted a mix of natural, ambient, and task lighting, so the room was reimagined with layers that work together rather than compete. LED mirrors offer a soft glow at the vanities, bar lights above each sink provide clarity for daily routines, and chandeliers above the bathtub and in the closet introduce a hint of glamour. Natural daylight continues to play a role, giving the room flexibility and a consistent, flattering illumination throughout the day. These lighting decisions ensure that the space functions well while maintaining its calm, inviting atmosphere. Spatial efficiency was another priority. Removing the original corner tub opened the room dramatically, making space for a freestanding bathtub and a more generous shower. The new layout feels intentional and balanced, with each element placed to enhance movement and ease of use. Brass plumbing fixtures and hardware tie the materials together, bringing a subtle gleam that enriches the otherwise quiet palette. Altogether, this renovation transforms the primary suite into a refined retreat—one that blends function, craftsmanship, and understated beauty in a way that feels effortless and deeply considered.

A retreat in every sense.
